How to choose patterned curtains

A patterned curtain is the largest piece of design you can put in a room without committing to it. It covers a wall-sized area, it changes with the light, and if you tire of it you take it down — which is not true of wallpaper, a sofa, or paint.

Everything here is patterned, because that is the whole catalogue — prints we draw, on panels we cut to your drop — and below is how to pick one that still looks right in a year.

What makes a pattern work in a room?

Scale first, colour second, and only one loud thing per room. The rule the trade keeps repeating is to match the scale of the print to the scale of the space: small prints in small rooms, large prints in large ones. A big repeat in a small room reads as clutter; a tiny repeat across a tall window reads as texture from three feet away and as nothing at all from the doorway.

Then the arithmetic of the room. A patterned panel is a feature, so it wants a quiet setting: a plain wall, a plain sofa, and it does the work on its own. If the wall is already papered or the sofa is already printed, the curtain should be the calm one — or you should pick a different room for the print.

One more thing people discover late: fullness changes a pattern. A panel gathered at two times the rod width folds the print into itself, so a bold repeat softens and a fine repeat can disappear entirely. If the print is the reason you are buying, hang it flatter.

Why do we have fewer patterns than everyone else?

Because we drew them. The large print-on-demand marketplaces offer designs by the hundred thousand, and the big custom workrooms offer fabric libraries in the thousands. We are not competing on that number and we would rather say so plainly.

Every pattern in this collection was designed in-house and printed on cloth we make up ourselves. There is no third-party catalogue in between, no drop-shipper, and no licensing deal — which is why you will not find these prints on five other stores, and why the collection is a considered list rather than an infinite scroll.

The trade-off is honest in both directions: if you have an exact print in your head and want to search a million of them, a marketplace will serve you better. If you would rather be handed a short list that someone has already edited, that is what this is.

Can patterned curtains still block light?

Yes — the pattern and the light control are separate decisions. Every panel we make is lined as standard and blocks up to 70% of incoming light, which is the band most brands sell as room darkening. An optional blackout lining takes it to full darkness and adds thermal insulation.

Because the lining sits behind the printed face, choosing blackout does not change the print or mute the colour from inside the room. You are not trading the pattern for the darkness.

Do patterned curtains come in my size?

There is no length list to pick from. Every panel is 53 inches wide and cut to the drop you enter, so the print lands where you need it rather than on a packaged 84-inch drop that nearly fits. A wider window takes more panels rather than a wider panel.

This matters more with a pattern than with a plain panel. A hemmed-up ready-made curtain loses part of the repeat at the bottom, and too few panels cut the design off at the edge. Measuring properly is covered on each room collection; the short version is to measure the rod rather than the window, multiply for fullness, then divide by 53 and round up to get your panel count.

How these are made

Lined as standard and cut to the floor — which is why you will see the same thing sold as patterned drapes in some stores. The trade reserves drapes for lined, floor-length panels and curtains for lighter, shorter ones; by that definition these are drapes. Most shoppers use both words, so we do too.

Browse by pattern, or by room

By pattern: floral curtains for botanicals and blooms, or boho curtains for looser, more textural repeats.

By room: living room curtains for the tall, wide windows where a print has the most room to work; bedroom curtains where light control comes first and the pattern second; nursery & kids curtains for a child's room.

Every panel is made to your size, with your choice of lining and header: pick a print, then set the measurements on its page.
