How to choose bedroom curtains

Bedroom curtains have one job the rest of the house never asks for: they have to help you sleep. Light control first, then the way the panel hangs, then the print — get the first two right and the pattern is the fun part.

Below are the bedroom curtain ideas that survive contact with a real window, plus the measuring, fabric and fitting answers that come with them — the short version of the curtain tips for a bedroom we would give you in person.

Light filtering, room darkening or blackout — which do you need?

Three words, three different rooms. Light filtering fabric softens daylight without stopping it. Room darkening blocks roughly 70–80% of incoming light: dim and private, but you can still tell it is morning. Blackout sits at the top of the scale, usually quoted at 95–100%.

Here is where our panels land on that scale:

  • Standard lining — included on every panel, blocks up to 70% of incoming light. That is the band most brands sell as room darkening curtains: a dim, private room with a soft edge of daylight at the window. Enough for most bedrooms, and enough to stop the print washing out at midday.
  • Blackout lining — the optional upgrade. Full darkness at any hour, plus thermal insulation: warmer in winter, cooler in summer.

If you are shopping for blackout curtains for bedroom windows — shift work, a light sleeper, a streetlight outside — take the blackout lining. If your window faces north, or you are awake with the sun anyway, the standard lining is already room darkening and you can stop there.

How do I measure for bedroom curtains?

Measure the rod, not the window — then add fullness. A panel cut to the exact width of the rod hangs flat and looks thin. Curtains need surplus fabric to fall in folds.

  1. Measure the rod, finials excluded. If the rod is not up yet, take the window width and add 3–10 inches on each side so the panels stack off the glass when open — that keeps your daylight and makes the window read larger. Brackets sit 4–6 inches above the frame, or at the ceiling line to make the room feel taller.
  2. Multiply for fullness. 1.5–2× the rod width. Two times is the safe default. Skip this step for pleated headers — see the note below.
  3. Divide by 53 and round up. That is your number of panels. Every panel is 53 inches wide. Example: a 60-inch rod at 2× fullness → 60 × 2 = 120, ÷ 53 = 2.3 → 3 panels.
  4. Measure the drop. From the top of the rod down to your hem line. Floor length is standard in a bedroom: finish about ½ inch above the floor so it does not drag, or add 6–16 inches if you want a deliberate puddle.

The drop is the only number you type. Panel width is fixed at 53 inches, so you choose how many panels rather than how wide each one is — and the drop is cut to the number you enter, with no standard-length list to pick from. Price updates per panel as you set the length.

Pleated headers have their fullness sewn in. Back tape and pinch pleat panels arrive already gathered, so the finished panel is narrower than its 53 inches of flat cloth. For those, skip step 2 and divide your rod width by the finished width shown with the header.

How wide should curtains be?

Twice the rod width in total fabric — reached by panel count, since every panel is 53 inches. A 72-inch rod wants about 144 inches of cloth: three panels give 159 inches, a comfortable 2.2×. Two panels give 106 inches, nearer 1.5× — flatter folds, which is the better choice when you want a print to read rather than fold into itself.

What fabric works best in a bedroom?

A mid-weight woven with a matte surface. Shiny fabric bounces light around a room you are trying to darken, and very light fabric will not hang straight — it lifts and flutters instead of falling.

Most of our panels are a 70% polyester / 30% cotton woven blend with a semi-matte finish; our linen designs are a 70% cotton / 30% linen blend. The cotton gives it the hand and the way it falls; the polyester is what keeps it from fading in a sun-facing window and what makes it easy to live with. It holds the folds you want and drops out of the ones you do not.

Should curtains be lighter or darker than the walls?

Either works — what matters is choosing deliberately. Curtains a shade or two lighter than the wall recede and make the room feel larger and calmer. Darker curtains frame the window and give the room a defined edge.

A patterned panel does something neither plain option can: it pulls a second colour into the room without repainting anything. Against a quiet wall the print becomes the feature — which is why a plain bedroom is the best possible place for one.

How much do custom bedroom curtains cost?

Price is calculated from the drop you enter, plus your lining and header choices, quoted per panel before you order. There is no size surcharge, because there are no standard lengths to be surcharged against: a 63-inch drop and a 120-inch drop run through the same formula. A wide window costs more only because it takes more panels.

That is the trade made-to-order asks for. A ready-made panel is cheaper on the shelf, and then you either hem it, live with a gap at the sill, or buy one wider than you need.

Which header should I pick?

  • Rod pocket — the rod slides through a sewn channel. The softest, most gathered look. Best for panels you leave mostly open or mostly closed, since they do not slide easily.
  • Grommet — metal rings across the top. Deep, even folds and the easiest to draw daily; the practical pick for a bedroom you open every morning.
  • Back tab — fabric loops sewn behind the top edge. The rod stays hidden and the panel hangs in soft, even folds from the front.
  • Back tape — hidden pleating tape sewn behind the panel. The most tailored drape, with the hardware out of sight.
  • Pinch pleat, double — two folds gathered and stitched at each pleat. A classic tailored heading.
  • Pinch pleat, triple — three folds at each pleat. The deepest and most formal of the six.

The last three arrive pleated, with the fullness sewn in — so the finished panel is narrower than its 53 inches of flat cloth, and you work out panel count from the finished width rather than by multiplying. The first three you gather yourself on the rod.

How do I hang bedroom window curtains?

Use a level, mark both brackets before you drill, and use drywall anchors anywhere you cannot hit a stud. Brackets sit 4–6 inches above the frame and 3–10 inches past it on each side.

With grommet panels, alternate the folds forward and back as you thread the rod — that is what produces an even repeating wave instead of a bunched top. Rod pocket panels slide straight on and get distributed by hand. If you are layering a sheer behind a lined panel, install the back rod first.

How Lumiso bedroom curtains are made

We design the prints and we make the curtains. There is no third-party catalogue in between, which is why you will not find these patterns on five other stores.

  • Made to order — 53 inches wide, cut and sewn to the drop you enter, every time
  • Production: 5–7 business days
  • Free worldwide shipping, no minimum
  • Sold as single panels, so you buy exactly the number of drops your window needs
  • Returns: because each panel is made for one specific window, returns and exchanges are accepted on defective items only. Measure twice before you order.

Looking for something more specific?

If the pattern matters more than the room, start with the prints: floral curtains for florals in any room, or boho curtains if you are after boho bedroom curtains with more texture and less structure. The full print library lives in patterned curtains.

For a kids bedroom or a nursery, where the light question is a different one, see nursery & kids curtains. For the rest of the house, living room curtains. Every panel is made to your size, with your choice of lining and header.
